Nearly all my sessions are over Zoom and last 50 minutes to an hour. Before we begin, I’ll send you a form in which you can briefly outline the problems that you face. During the first session, I’ll guide you through explaining more about your situation.
Simply explaining a difficult trial may be emotionally hard. We are embodied souls: God has created us as one whole person, body and soul. The traffic runs both ways between our bodies and our minds and one affects the other. I will endeavour to teach you how to notice when your nervous state is becoming upset and give you physical exercises that help you calm your mind.
I will listen carefully to what has happened to you. Are there any patterns of thought or behaviour that are not helping you? What is the effect of those patterns and do they drive you away from the One who is your Comforter and never leaves you? Together we will work to help you develop healthier patterns of thinking that redirect your eyes away from the problems that overwhelm you and fix them on the Lord who is your Shepherd, leading and guarding you in times of trouble. We will also work to develop patterns of behaviour that support relationships with your family, friends and church.
I may give you appropriate ‘homework’ to consolidate what you have learned during the session.
Unless you object, I would like to keep in touch with your church's pastoral care team and will encourage you to work with a safe person from your church because this means that you obtain the most appropriate support in-between our sessions.
K.J.:
"As a relatively new Christian, I found myself alone with my faith between Sundays. At home, at work, I wrestled with emotions about my pre-Christian life and sometimes found it hard navigating my relationships with family and colleagues. Kris came alongside me to provide a safe and supportive space to reflect on my questions, worries and joys - and most importantly, to pray together. I was able to think about difficult emotions, like anger, and share stories of hurt before bringing them to God together. I am so grateful for Kris' generosity in giving me her time, counsel and holding me up in prayer.
